Social media has transformed how people understand health and wellbeing. From nutrition advice and fitness routines to mindfulness and mental health, wellness influencers have made information more accessible and brought conversations once confined to professional settings into everyday life. However, concerns remain about the reliability of their advice, the promotion of unverified health claims, and the commercial interests that can shape their content.

SAYDF held a discussion examining the influence of wellness creators on public perceptions of health. Participants considered whether these influencers democratise access to useful information or risk blurring the line between evidence-based guidance and personal opinion. One perspective emphasised that relatable content can make healthy habits more approachable, particularly for young people who may struggle to access professional guidance. Others questioned whether popularity and personal anecdotes were being mistaken for expertise, especially when influencers promote products or make sweeping claims about health.

The discussion also explored the responsibility of platforms, creators, and audiences in distinguishing credible advice from misleading content. While some participants favoured stronger accountability for influencers making health-related claims, others stressed the importance of media literacy, arguing that audiences must learn to evaluate sources rather than accept or reject online advice wholesale.

Ultimately, the conversation highlighted a central tension: wellness influencers can make health information more accessible, but accessibility alone does not guarantee accuracy. The challenge lies in encouraging responsible content creation while helping audiences engage critically with the advice they encounter online.
